Carissa Hawthorne is the only daughter of Max and Sunny Hawthorne, the youngest of four children with three older brothers. As an heiress to her family's fortune and a share of the family company, as well as being a member of one of the ruling families of the small island nation of Auveria, Carissa was raised quite like a princess. After having been kidnapped at the age of twelve, a personal bodyguard, Niles, was assigned to shadow her for many years, much to his consternation, as Carissa has never lost her free spirited-ness, and she often attempted to get away from him for some free time to explore by herself. Her best friend is Virginia Westin, who introduced her to her (Virginia's) brother, Colin, whom Carissa has dated on-and-off since. Carissa returned the favor by having introduced Virginia to her own brother, Eric. They, too, have been dating on-and-off and have a daughter together, Carissa's niece Calista.
