History
Family / Childhood
- Ned and Alice Wakefield met in college. Alice was engaged to Henry Patman, but broke it off with him (on their wedding day, actually) and ran off with Ned instead. Ned and Alice first met when he saved her from drowning when she was caught in an undertow at the beach.
- Alice has two sisters, Nancy (older) and Laura (younger); Laura has two daughters, Robin (the twins' age) and Stacy (four years younger than Robin); Laura has one daughter, Kelly, and is divorced from her husband. The cousins often visit, and the twins got to visit Robin and Stacy once by themselves (for being "mature").
- Older brother Steven was born first, about three years before the twins.
- Born on June 13, 1994, Elizabeth is four minutes older than Jessica.
- Up until middle school, the twins shared a room and frequently wore matching outfits.
- Once they started middle school, Elizabeth moved into the spare bedroom, which was connected to (what was now) Jessica's room via the bathroom that they continued to share.
- They pulled "twin swaps" a lot in elementary and middle school. Usually it was to help get Jessica out of trouble. Elizabeth hopes that they will pull fewer twin swaps now that they are in high school.
- The twins were named after their great-great-grandmother Jessamyn and great-great-great-aunt Elisabeth (first names) and their great-grandmother Samantha and great-great-aunt Amanda (middle names). Both sets of namesakes were identical twins.
- Elizabeth took riding lessons, and both twins took dance lessons.
Sweet Valley Kids
- The Runaway Hamster: In the second grade, the girls were chosen to take the class hamster home over winter break. Elizabeth was thrilled, but Jessica was afraid the hamster would get out of the cage. The hamster ended up getting lost, and Mrs. Wakefield bought the girls a new hamster to bring into school. Steven's science project, a mouse trap, caught the hamster, so the girls were able to return it to the class. (SVK: Runaway Hamster)
- The Secret Pet Cat: The girls also temporarily had a secret pet cat when they found a stray. Despite knowing about Ned and Steven's allergy to cats, they hid the kitten in their closet, until they think that the cat might be sick, so they tell their parents about it, who figure out that the cat is having kittens. After the kittens are born, their friends adopt the cat and kittens. (SVK: Jessica's Cat Trick)
- Teacher Got Married / The Lemonade Stand: When their teacher was getting married, the girls and the rest of their classmates decided to each chip in $2 to buy their teacher a present. To earn their $4 (combined), Elizabeth and Jessica decided to start a lemonade stand. After Jessica went off with her friends and Elizabeth made $3 selling lemonade, Jessica took the money and bought herself two bracelets. Mrs. Wakefield gave Elizabeth the $2 she needed for the class present, and Jessica had to work for her money (but Elizabeth ended up helping her anyway, and Jessica gave her one of the bracelets). (SVK: Elizabeth's Super-Selling Lemonade)
- Broken Arm: Elizabeth broke her left arm when she was seven years old. She and Jessica were playing at their friend Amy Sutton's house and climbing a tree when Elizabeth fell out of the tree. She was upset to miss school the next day, but Jessica was jealous of the attention that Elizabeth was getting. They made up soon, however (as they always do). (SVK: Elizabeth's Broken Arm)
- Being Overly Helpful: When Jessica was having monster nightmares and not sleeping well, Elizabeth thought that she was helping by telling their friends, so they would know why Jess was tired. Jessica drew a picture of the monster from her nightmares in art class, and when the teacher sent Jessica to the nurse to take a nap (after almost falling asleep in class), Elizabeth, the teacher, and the rest of the class turned Jessica's scary monster silly, to help her with her fear. (SVK: Jessica's Monster Nightmare)
- Her Circus-Wannabe Sister: When the circus came to town, Jessica was fascinated by the horseback riders, so the twins' mom told them about their great-great-great-grandmother Jessamyn and great-great-great-great-aunt Elisabeth, and about how Jessamyn ran off to become a circus performer, but Elisabeth went and found her (conveniently leaving off the fact that Elisabeth tried the circus riding when she found Jessamyn and then fell and died). Jessica decided to try to repeat the past and ran off to try to join the circus, despite the fact that it was Elizabeth who was taking riding lessons. Elizabeth went after Jessica and brought her home, both girls returning safely. Jessica did get to ride in the circus at the end, though. (SVK: The Amazing Jessica)
Sweet Valley Twins (We've moved some of the events of the books to other years, to spread them out. Some of the trippier books [BIG for Christmas, The Magic Christmas] are ignored altogether)
Sixth Grade:
- Drifting Apart From Jessica: Upon starting the sixth grade, the girls began developing their own interests: Elizabeth gravitated toward the school newspaper while Jessica was drawn to the "Unicorn Club." Fearing that they were drifting apart, Elizabeth wanted to join the Unicorn Club, since Jessica was so into it, but when her pledge task was to make a classmate eat a shaving cream sundae, Elizabeth balked (Jessica ended up pretending to be Elizabeth to pull the prank, but Elizabeth caught on and talked the classmate out of switching to a private school), and ended up not joining. She and Jessica remained best friends, of course, but Elizabeth ended up moving into the spare bedroom. (SVT: Best Friends)
- Class Treasurer: Elizabeth ran against fellow sixth grader Peter DeHaven for the position of class treasurer. Although friend Amy Sutton was originally her campaign manager, she quit after a disagreement between the girls and helped Peter, instead. After Elizabeth and Peter both gave their speeches, Elizabeth and Amy made up, and Elizabeth was elected Class Treasurer anyway, a position she held through all of middle school. (SVT: Buried Treasure; the last part is stretched to make some of the events that have been moved to 8th grade more plausible)
- Running For Class President: When the sixth grade class president moved away from Sunnydale, there was a brief election for a new president. Both Elizabeth and Jessica were nominated, as well as Randy Mason, one of their "nerdy" classmates. Elizabeth ended up dropping out of the race because she was already Class Treasurer, and she felt that Randy had better ideas than she did. He ended up winning the election. (SVT: Tug of War)
- Mom's Cancer Scare: Just after the twins noticed that their mom has been tired and pale for a while, Jessica overheard something about Alice's blood test results on the phone. When the kids (Steven included) confronted her, she admitted that the doctor found a lump on her neck and she needed to go in for a biopsy. Jessica took charge and started ordering Steven and Liz around, while she mostly stayed with their mother. When the test results came back, they were inconclusive: it was most likely a bad virus, but there was a small chance it could be cancer. After more tests, it turned out to only be a bad virus. (SVT: Center of Attention)
- Worry About Parents' Marriage: When the twins were in the sixth grade, they threw a 16th anniversary party for their parents, but were worried when Ned and Alice had forgotten about their own anniversary. Jessica started worrying that their marriage was in trouble because she saw her mother having lunch with a strange man (who turns out to be a very rich client of Alice's, as she is interior decorating his mansion). Both twins start jumping to conclusions about the state of their parents' marriage when neither seems to particularly care whether the other is home or not, and they don't want to talk about how they met and fell in love (part of a social studies project that Liz was working on). When they tried telling Steven that they thought their mom was in love with her client (Frank Howard), he told them they were nuts, but was somehow convinced when the twins speculated that the reason Alice had shown them the picture of Frank's mansion was because they would soon be living there. When they see Alice and Frank looking at china and engagement rings, they continue jumping to conclusions and try to sabotage the relationship that they think is happening between Alice and Frank, … until they meet Frank's fiancée, Karen. Everyone had a laugh about the whole situation, and the Wakefield parents assured their children that they are still in love and happily married. (SVT: Jumping to Conclusions)
- War Between the Twins: After an article on the Unicorns had to be removed from the sixth grade newspaper (Elizabeth had promised Jessica and the Unicorns that it would be printed) to make room for another story, a fight started between the twins because Elizabeth hadn't had a chance to tell Jessica that the story had been removed, and Jess was outraged at the "underhandedness" of it. The Unicorns, in retaliation, decided to put out their own paper. Elizabeth was secretly a bit glad that the Unicorns' paper didn't do very well (nobody picked up a copy), because she felt that then maybe Jessica would understand how much work really went into a newspaper, though she did, of course, feel sorry for her twin. They did make up, of course, as they always do, but Elizabeth still hopes that the experience taught Jessica about how much work she and her friends put into The Sixers. (SVT: The War Between the Twins)
Seventh Grade:
- The Fundraiser With The Movie Star: The Christmas when the twins were in the seventh grade, the middle school and high school were having a competition to raies money for the hospital (the competition was over which school could raise the most). Elizabeth came up with the idea of inviting an actor, Beau Dillon, to appear at a benefit, since he was involved in a movie about a kid with cancer. He was supposed to stop at the Wakefields' house when he was in Sunnydale for a meeting, but he was late and Elizabeth had already had to leave to do Santa's Helper things at the hospital, so Jessica (who was at home) pretended to be Elizabeth. Beau made a lunch date with "Elizabeth" for after Christmas to talk about the benefit. Jessica didn't tell Elizabeth that Beau had come by, wanting to keep the lunch date for herself. After she had a very "A Christmas Carol" Christmas Eve, Jessica realized how selfish she was (temporarily) and told Elizabeth that Beau had shown up after all. The benefit ended up being a success. (SVT: The Christmas Ghost; book is set in sixth grade, we've moved it to the seventh grade)
Eighth Grade:
- The Visit From The Guardian Angel: When the twins were in the eighth grade, their class was raising money (through bake sales and car washes and etc) to have an end-of-semester / Christmas party in December. As the class treasurer, Elizabeth held onto all the money that the eighth grade had raised, keeping it all in a box hidden in her closet. Jessica was appointed the party planner, but in true Jessica fashion, she was very indecisive about what she wanted to do. At the same time, Elizabeth was volunteering at the homeless shelter. She was particularly attached to two girls, sisters, at the shelter, who were there with their mom because they'd lost their house; their father was up north, looking for work. The father got a job, and the mom found a small apartment that they could move into, so that they wouldn't have to spend Christmas in the shelter, but the father's boss couldn't front him the money for the rent (which was, coincidentally, just about the same amount that the eighth graders had raised), and by the time he would be back with the money, the apartment would be gone. Elizabeth decided to help, because she had the money (even though it wasn't hers) for their rent, and surely the father would be back with the money before Jessica decided on a theme for the party. So she loaned the money to the family, but then the father was caught in a storm coming home, and Elizabeth had to admit to Jessica and the rest of the party planning committee that she didn't have the money. She ran out, away from the anger of her sister and friends. In a fit of depression over everything going so terribly, she wished that she had never been born. Her guardian angel (a hip 60s teenager named Laura) came down and made her wish true, showing Elizabeth how different things were without her around. Liz wishes that she could go back, and she ends up outside the school, where the eighth grade party is. It turns out that the shelter dad showed up with the money, and everyone realized what happened, and they forgave Elizabeth. (SVT: A Christmas Without Elizabeth; book is set in sixth grade, but we've moved it to the eighth grade)
