History

Katie Bell was hardly part of the pureblood elite. In fact, her family was incredibly detached from the purebloods and purists. Her mother Elizabeth's bloodline was spotty at best, while her father William is a muggleborn wizard. They didn't have a huge manor out in the middle of nowhere, they didn't have any house elves. Instead, they had a small house that always seemed like it was just about to fall down (though it never did) in Worchestershire, England. It was in this small house that Katie grew up, and her father still lives there.

William had been fascinated by the sport of quidditch when he was a student at Hogwarts, and he fostered a similar fascination and love of the sport in his only child. In fact, he even got a job in the Ministry department of Magical Games and Sports so that he could surround himself with quidditch. As a result, he was able to get tickets to matches as Katie was growing up, and he always took her with him. Katie was determined to join the quidditch team at Hogwarts as soon as she was able. It was through quidditch that Katie bonded with her dad, and she became very much a Daddy's Girl. She was close to her mother, as well, but not quite as close as she was to her father. Elizabeth, a housewife, nagged Katie about her studies and tried to get William to stop taking Katie to so many quidditch matches.

In her second year, Katie joined the team as a chaser, and it was through her position as Chaser that she became friends with both Alicia Spinnet and Angelina Johnson, both third years who were the other two chasers on the team. Of course, it was through the team that she also met Oliver (who she, admittedly, had a crush on for those three years they were both on the team), the twins, and the famous Harry Potter, who had joined as the team's seeker at the same time Katie joined the team.

Katie had always been a bit accident prone (she wasn't klutzy, it was just that she was more likely to get hurt by something than a less accident-prone person might have been), but this really showed itself when she started playing quidditch. In her first match, she took a bludger to the back of her head only a few minutes into the match. During the Gryffindor / Slytherin match in her fourth year, the Slytherin captain grabbed her head instead of the quaffle and nearly unseated her. In her sixth year, Ron Weasley, the team's new keeper, accidentally threw the quaffle to her too hard and hit her nose, causing a nosebleed (also in her sixth year, unrelated to quidditch, Peeves pelted her with ink pellets, and then he dumped an inkwell over her head in a spare classroom). In her seventh year, although it was also unrelated to quidditch, she missed several games because she had been put under the Imperius Curse in Hogsmeade to carry a cursed necklace up to the school and to Dumbledore, but the necklace accidentally touched her skin through a hole in the glove, and she had to be taken to St. Mungo's to recover, though she did return to school in time to play in her final match and help Gryffindor win the Quidditch Cup for the third time in her career at the school (the other two having been in her fourth year and her sixth year).

Academically, Katie was a relatively decent student. She excelled in Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts, though (like many of her peers) she was prone to falling asleep in History of Magic and was glad to drop it after fifth year. Although she enjoyed Herbology, she wasn't particularly as good at it as she was in Charms and Defense. Potions was among her least favourite classes and she was also happy to drop that class after O.W.L.s year. Unfortunately, her marks on her N.E.W.T.s were not as good as they should have been, considering that she missed several months of classes because of the cursed necklace incident. Because she had always been hoping for a career in quidditch, she had never been too worried about the state of her marks, until she missed those matches in her seventh year. Thankfully, however, she was able to get a contract to play as a reserve chaser for the Appleby Arrows, beginning the season after she completed her N.E.W.T.s.

Although she had joined the DA in her sixth year, that was about as close as Katie came to any kind of active involvement in the war, and she had really mostly joined it because she loved Defense and disliked Umbridge's classes: she wanted to actually learn defense. After leaving school, she mostly tried to remain a neutral party — again, she was accident-prone enough even without being in the line of fire, so to speak. Of course, she was supportive of the trio and the Order, even though she didn't join them.

The war actually touched a lot closer to home for Katie than she would have expected. Her mother was killed by a Death Eater during the war. It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and she was hit by a stray curse. Katie felt a mixture of sadness and guilt, the guilt because she thought she should be more broken-up about her mum's death than she was, even though they weren't as close as she was to her father. Katie threw herself into quidditch after that point, determined to become the best chaser she could possibly be, hoping that her mum was watching from Heaven (although not religious, Katie does believe in Heaven and Hell) and would be proud of her. This, unfortunately, also led her into unstable relationships, made worse by the fact that the war itself was putting her on-edge.

By the time the war ended, she was relieved that it was all over. She managed to ease up on the tumult that her life had become, though the focus she had put on her game had paid off: she was made a starting chaser for the Arrows in the 2000 - 2001 season, which her father is incredibly proud of her for (and he brags about it to the boys at the office), and he assures her that Elizabeth would be proud of her, as well. She is, of course, still accident-prone, but she is better, after so many years of professional quidditch, at dodging bludgers. She is, however, very prone to tripping over her own feet and dropping something heavy or fragile that she's carrying, or bump into someone and spill coffee all over herself. She's starting to accept it as a fact of her life and even laugh about it sometimes.
