History

On the 8th of October, 1980, Robert (Bob) and Demeter Montgomery were blessed with their first children: identical twin girls whom they named Calliope and Thalia (Calliope was born first, followed by Thalia, a fact that Calliope will not let anyone forget). Although the fact of the girls being twins was a surprise, they were both doted upon from the start. They were followed shortly by three younger siblings: a brother Acheron in 1984, a sister Clio in 1988, and finally another brother Alpheus in 1992. Although the Montgomery family was a well-known pureblood family, they lacked the status, power, and wealth of other pureblood families such as the Blacks and Malfoys (though they certainly were not considered to be blood-traitors like the Weasleys); both Bob and Demeter had to hold down jobs to support their family, both in the ministry: Bob in the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and Demeter in the Department of Magical Transportation. The children's spinster aunt Alphaea Ogden also lived with the family; she often took care of the children while Bob and Demeter were working, so while Thalia is not as close to her aunt as Calliope is, Alphaea still holds a very fond place in Thalia's heart.

The Montgomery children's childhood was rather quiet, tucked away from modern Muggle society in rural Norfolk. They enjoyed the peace that resulted from Lord Voldemort's defeat by the infant Potter and were allowed to grow up as children, rather than being constantly worried by a war around them. While Calliope quickly stepped up into the leadership position that was guaranteed for her by virtue of being first-born, Thalia was happy to let her twin lead while she struck off on her own, in a way. Calliope remained her closest and best friend, though she dearly loved her younger siblings, as well. Even from a young age, she was not as interested in playing house as Calliope was, preferring to play with dolls and construct elaborate fantasies wherein one doll (with curly brown hair that she named Lia, ahem) was adored and loved by all the other dolls for her sweetness and beauty. As she got older, she liked to play with her mother's makeup, too. She never liked playing outside very much because she hated to get dirty, already growing quite vain of her appearance. But if her siblings were playing outside, she would sit in a nice clean spot and watch them.

Thalia was incredibly excited to go off to Hogwarts with Calliope when they were eleven. Although she would dreadfully miss the others, she was looking forward to the school. Most of all, however, she was fully expecting to be sorted into the same house as Calliope. It was impossible for her to imagine ever being separated from her twin. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened when the Sorting Hat was placed upon their twin heads. Calliope went first and was sorted into Gryffindor. Thalia stepped up to the stool as her twin went to join the table of students adorned in red and gold, positive as the hat slid down over her ears that it would send her over to join Calliope. Much to her shock, the hat whispered into her ear that Slytherin was the place for her, a wonderful fit for someone of her virtue. Thalia silently asked the hat "What about Calliope?" and it assured her that Gryffindor was as perfect a fit for her twin as Slytherin was for her. It didn't even occur to Thalia to argue with the hat, and so she let it send her off to the table of green and silver. Throughout the welcome feast, Thalia stared mournfully across the room at the Gryffindor table, missing her sister already. They had never been separated, and throughout all of their preparations for school, they had assumed that they would end up in the same house.

The initial separation was hard on Thalia, but it was eased slightly when she discovered that she could still eat her meals with her sister and they did have classes together, and they could spend free time after classes together. She desperately missed being able to whisper good night to her twin after lights out and hearing her breathing across the room whenever Calliope fell asleep first. She helped allay her loneliness by befriending the girls in her dorm, her new roommates. After all, they were away from home and any siblings they might have, too.

Aside from having been sorted into a different house than Calliope, Thalia rather enjoyed Hogwarts. Her grades were passable, due mostly to the fact that she preferred to spend her free time socialising, rather than studying. Childhood friends and acquaintances (mostly fellow purebloods) seemed to be in her house in abundance, and she tried as best she could to make sure that they did not freeze Calliope out simply because she was in a different house.

When the war began, Thalia grew a bit disgusted with some of her housemates' seeming support of Lord Voldemort. She didn't necessarily support Harry Potter, but as others were whispering about Voldemort siding with creatures, Thalia was disgusted by that. She'd always been rather prejudiced against anything that wasn't wholly human, and if this Lord Voldemort would willingly side with them, then she did not want to side with him, especially since he seemed overly concerned with purity (and really, how can you be pure when you have monsters on your side?).

Regardless, the war also affected the Montgomery family more directly than any of them could have imagined. In the spring of her fifth year, her littlest brother Alphaeus was attacked by Fenrir Greyback, one of the monsters that was supposed to be linked to Lord Voldemort. Thalia spent the night with her sister in a state of frantic worry, awaiting news of Alphaeus and hoping for the best. Her much-cared-for nails were bitten and ragged, her hair sticking up in odd directions from running her fingers through it. When news came that the five-year-old had died from the extensive injuries that he had sustained, Thalia felt like she had been punched in the gut. The sense of loss was deep, and she knew that it could only be worse for Calliope, who had been more mother than sister to Alphaeus. For the first time since first year, Thalia truly loathed being in a different house than her sister, she didn't want to be separated from her for even so much as a night. Even though they were supposedly safe within the walls of the school, she began having nightmares of something happening to Calliope, or Acheron, or Clio, or their parents, or Aunt Alphaea. More than once she had to visit Madam Pomfrey for a Sleeping Draught.

Thalia's last two years at Hogwarts passed in more of a haze of fear than her first five. She was constantly worried about her family, and she was more anxious than ever about being in a different house than her sister. Oh, if only Calliope had been sorted into Slytherin, or Thalia into Gryffindor.

Of course, on the outside, Thalia maintained her composure, the sweet and demure exterior that she had cultivated for most of her life. Inside, however, her pre-existing dislike of creatures grew into an intense fear and loathing. Her feelings were especially potent towards werewolves, after what that monster did to Alphaeus, but she also feared and hated other human-esque creatures: vampires, giants, veelas, banshees, et cetera.

Upon finishing Hogwarts (after barely scraping by with passing grades), Thalia knew that she would not be able to join any of those oft-advertised War Programmes. She simply didn't have the constitution for any of that kind of work, though she fully supported those who joined the ranks of Aurors, Hit Wizards, Healers, and et cetera. Instead, she managed to get a job as a sales clerk at Madam Malkin's Robes For All Occasions, where she put her charm and charisma to good use.

When Calliope quit her own job as a sales clerk (at Madam Pimpernelle's Beautifying Potions) to become a hit witch, Thalia became more worried than ever, afraid every day that Calliope would not come home. Calliope did come home, which helped ease Thalia's fear, but it was always there under the surface.

When the war ended, Thalia was filled with a sense of great relief, though there was a dark spot to that relief. Fenrir Greyback was still on the loose, and her fear of him had never lessened (in fact, if anything, it had grown more potent over the years). At least, however, the wizarding world was safer and her sister wouldn't be off on such dangerous missions.

In 2002, after three years at Madam Malkin's, Thalia decided to branch out from selling clothing. A clerk position had just opened up at Fantastic Furnishings, and she applied and earned the job. A great deal of her wages came from commissions, so she really had to put all of the sales skills that she had learned at Madam Malkin's to work at her new job, but when pairing that with her charming charisma, it was easy for her to convince clients to spend more money than they had originally intended.

When Fenrir Greyback was finally apprehended (and by Calliope's team, no less! How's that for justice? Though Thalia was initially more relieved to have her sister back safe and sound, after she had disappeared for work for a few days with only leaving a note), Thalia finally felt as though a great weight that had been on her shoulders since she was sixteen had been lifted. Although there were still creatures skulking around, the worst of them all was imprisoned. The fanmail that Greyback began receiving disgusted Thalia to no end, but she is still mostly just happy and relieved that he is finally behind bars, and she hopes he is disposed of like the monster he is.
