History

To be a muse was positively great: you were among the Gods, but you were not a God yourself (which was something of a relief to Terpsichore: who would want all that pressure, to be a God or Goddess?). Terpsichore was quite happy to be a muse — the muse of dance and the dramatic chorus, to be more specific. Yes, being a muse was far preferable to being a God: everything that was good in the world was inspired by either herself or one of her eight sisters. She could dance, and she could inspire others to dance. It was paradise.

It was also boring, at times. Oh, sure, it was fun to influence the mortals and it was amazing to hang out with the Gods, but mortals just looked like they would be so much fun to hang out with, too. They might not be Gods, but they were pretty entertaining to watch. So when the opportunity arose to join some of the other Gods and Goddesses in living as mortal for a while, Terpsichore jumped and danced at the opportunity: but only if she got to stay with her best friend and favorite sister, Euterpe. The two of them decided that what they wanted most of all was a real, genuine, all-American family, and they wanted to be normal teenagers.

Terpsichore and Euterpe decided to join the Smith family, who had two teenage daughters: Cadence and Melody. The girls were absolutely perfect for Terpsichore and Euterpe: Melody was a musical prodigy and Cadence had the rhythm of dance ingrained into her very soul. Of course, Cadence seemed to prefer ballet over other forms of dance, but Terpsichore knew that she could be just as good at some of the more modern and fun styles of dance, if just given the chance (nothing against ballet, it's very pretty, but it just doesn't look nearly as fun to do as hip-hop and things like that). So while Euterpe became Melody, a voice major senior at Idyllwild Arts Academy, Terpsichore became Cadence, a dance major junior at Idyllwild.

The change that came over Melody was reflected to a somewhat lesser extent in Cadence: Cadence had already been a bit of an outgoing girl, but she was suddenly a lot more outgoing and more inclined to hang out with boys than with girls (not in a particularly flirty manner, but more like she was just one of the guys). Cadence had always been gifted at dance, particularly ballet, but she suddenly began to branch out beyond ballet, though she insisted that the reason for this change was that she realized that she needed to expand her horizons and become more of a well-rounded dancer. Like Melody had, prior to Terpsichore and Euterpe arriving on the scene, Cadence'd had plans to attend Juilliard, though those plans were changed to mimic Melody's: to attend Dartwood University, which was not too far from their hometown of Idyllwild. Again, Cadence had an obvious reasoning: her sister was accepted to Dartwood, so naturally Cadence wanted to stay near her sister, instead of going all the way across the country.

Once Cadence joined her sister on campus, she was immediately disappointed to find that there was not a dance major at Dartwood. Though she grumbled quite vocally about it, she chose to major in music with a minor in theatre, then supplemented her academics (which she did not care much for; studying and stuff always seemed highly overrated to Cadence, even before Terpsichore took over) with membership in both the Dance Company and the Dance Club. Also in her freshman year, she chose to rush the same sorority that Melody was a member of: Delta Delta Delta, partly because it was Melody's sorority and partly because it really did seem like the best fit for her.

Now in her sophomore year, Cadence is still enjoying her time as a mortal, especially with frat parties in the mix. The fun part of college is certainly taking more of her attention than the studying part, as she is doing only the barest minimum to pass her classes. Sure, she's busy with sorority things, the occasional classwork, and both the dance company and the dance club, but at least she's never bored!
