History

The son of a veterinarian, Derek was around animals his whole life: in addition to the family's pets, he and his younger brother were often drafted to help out in their dad's office after school. It was during such an occasion that Derek — doing something so mundane as feeding one of the dogs in the kennel — discovered his power: he could communicate with animals. Not just baby-talk them, like some people did with their pets, but actually talk to them and get responses back.

Although he studied in college to become a veterinarian, he eventually decided against it and started working odd jobs in kennels and animal shelters. It was in the middle of the summer after he graduated from college that he was approached by Professor Samuel Green about working at the school he was opening, as the stable-hand.
