History

Malcolm Nettles and Elizabeth Morgan had a wartime relationship and wedding. They started dating in their seventh year at Hogwarts, and got married the summer after graduation, a quick and quiet elopement with just their parents and best friends there. With all the rampant fear, plus Elizabeth being a muggleborn, they wanted to seize life while they had it. Daughter Olivia was born while they were still in the height of fear, but son Jake was born after You-Know-Who was (supposedly) gone. Their early years of marriage, when Malcolm was apprenticing with an herbologist, Elizabeth was still in healer training, and the children were young, involved a lot of Malcolm and Elizabeth figuring out who they were as adults and as a couple.

Not that Olivia even realised. She was just about the happiest baby in the world. Of course she cried (all babies cry), but she was happy to contemplate her toes and fingers, she happily went to whoever wanted to hold her, and once she learned how to smile, it was like she never stopped. Even when she got a younger brother, Olivia didn't mind: she loved having a new playmate around. He was like a doll, except he didn't like when she tried to dress him in her dolls' clothes. It was actually Jake who ended up shunning his older sister, though she continued trying to mother him as they grew up.

Olivia lived a relatively happy and blissful life. She didn't notice, when she was six, that her father had moved out of the house for a couple of months. She did notice when he did it again the summer she was 11. Her parents did their best to keep their marital discord away from their kids, trying to make sure their kids had the best life they could give them, but Olivia wasn't totally blind to it. She just pushed down any sad feelings she had about it and turned on her happiness instead. And, much to her brother's consternation, she focused even more on trying to mother him during times when their father wasn't home. Neither Olivia nor Jake knows that, ever since Jake started at Hogwarts, Malcolm has spent more time living in the apartment above his shop than living at home (he's always at home with their mum when they come home for school holidays).

Thanks to spending time in her dad's shop (which he opened when she was eight), she's particularly excellent at herbology. She knows that she could become his apprentice when she graduates, though right now her ambitions lean more toward her mother's career. She loves taking care of people, and being a Healer is just more of that. Her O.W.L. scores in Defense and Transfiguration weren't the best, she knows she'll have to get them up for her N.E.W.T.s to make it into Healer training, but she has confidence that she'll be able to do it.

Shortly before Olivia and Jake were to return to Hogwarts, their mother stopped by the Ministry on her way to work, for the muggleborn registration. When she didn't return home that evening, Malcolm assured them that she was probably working late. He went to the Ministry the following day to inquire after his wife, and when he returned to his shop (where Olivia and Jake were helping out for the summer), he simply told his children that the hospital was very busy right now, so their mother would probably have to be getting home well after the kids were in bed, and leaving again in the morning before they got up. He would take them to the train himself, but let their mother know they would miss her. He didn't want to worry them with the truth.

Personality

Friendly: Not just "friendly," as in will smile socially at people and say hello in passing, but friendly, as in Olivia will walk right up to you and give you a hug if she thinks you look like you need a hug. As in, she will strike up a conversation with you, with a very cheery mood and smile, even if you've expressed dislike of her in the past. As in, she never has anything bad to say about anyone else, and is absolutely positive that everyone has some good in them, even if they insist on burying it down deep deep inside.

(S)mothering: What began as simply an older sister delighted to have a younger brother to play with, then turned into an older sister quietly helping to make sure her brother was doing fine even with parental strife hidden in the background, eventually turned into a desire (and even a desperate need) to mother everyone around her, even to the point of sometimes smothering them. She makes sure that those around her are eating their vegetables, and taking breaks from studying to rest their brains, and getting plenty of sunshine and fresh air. She'll help people get to the hospital wing if they need it, and also insist that they go if they're feeling unwell or are injured. Even from her first year at Hogwarts, she insisted on caring for everyone, even the older students.

Acrophobic: Olivia had a terrifying incident of accidental magic when she was five, where she ended up on top of the roof of the sunroom, and nearly tumbled right off the edge. She had no idea how to get down, or how she had gotten up there in the first place, and her father (working in the garden at the time) didn't hear her crying for almost fifteen minutes. Ever since, Olivia has been absolutely petrified of heights. When she got to Hogwarts, she absolutely begged the Sorting Hat to not place her in either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw: her parents had told them about the towers that the students in those houses lived in, and she would rather go straight back home than live up high in a tower for seven years.

Follower: You could probably say that Olivia lacks independent thought. You could probably call her a sheep. Neither would necessarily be a complete lie. She has a brain and she can use it to think, but she just prefers to not be the one to come up with plans. She'll happily follow along with whatever everyone else is doing, and will happily do whatever she's asked or told to do. The only exception is if what you're asking her to do would hurt her or someone else, in which case she actually will refuse. But on the flip side, if you tell her that what you're asking her to do would help someone else, then even if it sounds suspicious, she will probably do it anyway.
