History

Gabriel Santos met Adele Taylor in a rather typical way: through work. What was atypical about their meeting, however, was that they were both working on the same case, and they had to act as husband and wife in order to gather the information that was needed. The acting seemed to take, however, and a year later they were married for real. Of course, to the majority of the world, neither Gabriel Santos nor Adele Taylor actually existed. When they married, they assumed the surname Palmeiro, and Gabriel became Carlos and Adele became Elizabeth. Carlos and Elizabeth Palmeiro settled down in the town of Farnham in Surrey, England. To their neighbours, they lived a quiet an uneventful life. Carlos' "mother" often came to stay with their daughter, Rebecca, after she was born, while Carlos and Elizabeth were off "traveling for work." Although they did not speak much of their jobs to their neighbours, it was casually mentioned that they often had to travel for long periods of time, going to business meetings and the like.

And so Rebecca, whose real birth certificate lists her full name as Rebecca Maria Taylor-Santos (although that one is locked up with all information about her parents' true identities; her "fake" birth certificate lists her name as Rebecca Maria Palmeiro), grew up. Her life was as uneventful as their neighbours believed her parents' lives to be. She certainly never knew where her parents really were, all those times that they were gone as she was growing up, and she truly believed that the woman who came and stayed with her was her paternal grandmother. In fact, she has never met any of her true relatives, and believes her father's "mother" to be her only living relative outside of her parents.

However, despite all the secrecy that surrounded her parents' lives, Rebecca had a fairly normal, if charmed, childhood. She was an only child, and quite spoiled, too. Anything she could possibly want was provided for her, and she never questioned where the money that was paying for all these things came from. In fact, she was quite happy to remain in the dark about her parents, so long as they always returned home safe and sound.

The summer that Rebecca was eleven, her normal-seeming life changed for the abnormal, in a way completely unrelated to her parents' jobs. An owl arrived at the Palmeiro house one morning. It was a morning that Gabriel and Adele were actually home for once. The owl delivered a letter, proclaiming that Rebecca was a witch, and inviting her to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Of course, Gabriel and Adele knew the need for secrecy better than any other parents, and they cautioned Rebecca to keep quiet about the letter and the owl, while they looked into it. Through careful investigation, they discovered that one of their "co-workers" was actually a witch herself, who confirmed the existence of Hogwarts, and offered to take Rebecca to get her school supplies. She also went with Gabriel, Adele, and Rebecca to Kings Cross station, to show Rebecca the way onto the platform.

And so, on September 1, 1971, Rebecca boarded the Hogwarts Express and was on her way to school. The discovery that she was a witch was shocking to her (though perhaps it would have been less shocking if she had already known that her parents were leading double lives). The fact that she had to keep her magical abilities a secret while at home led her to her own double life, one that she found she actually vaguely enjoyed. It became fun, making up stories to the neighbours back home about the school that she went off to every year. Because she had grown up in the dark about her parents' double lives, she was able to be light-hearted and whimsical about her own.

Rebecca enjoyed her classes at Hogwarts. At first, everything was fascinating to her, since it was all so unlike the classes she had taken at her muggle primary school. Of course, after a while the novelty of everything wore off, and now in her sixth year, Rebecca feels wholly comfortable in her magical life, happy with the classes that she does have and very happy to have dropped the classes that she did after having taken the O.W.L.s. She doesn't know yet what she wants to do after she finishes school, but that's all part of the adventure, right?
