History

The middle child of muggles Stanley and Florence Vance, Emmeline was born in late September of 1957, following older brother Robert by three years and followed another three years later by younger sister Lucinda. The family lived a relatively quiet life in Boston, though Florence was often busy at the hospital. Stanley compensated by working from home so that someone would be around for the children. It came as something of a shock to the family when, in the summer of 1969, an owl arrived with a letter for Emmeline (an owl delivering the post! That went beyond strange) inviting her to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At first, the family was wary, believing it to be a practical joke of some kind, but then someone from the school showed up and explained it all to them, about how Emmeline was a witch and that Hogwarts would provide her with the education that she needed. Stanley and Florence finally relented and allowed her to go. Although she would miss her parents, brother, and sister, she was immensely curious about the school that, and she really wanted to go there, as well.

In 1972, Emmeline waited curiously for a letter to arrive for Lucinda. Because Robert had not received one (and in Emmeline's first year at Hogwarts, she learned that her parents and brother were known as "muggles" or non-magic folk), Emmeline did not know if Lucy would also be a witch like Emmeline, or a muggle like their parents and Robert. In late July, an owl arrived at the house again, carrying with it a booklist for Emmeline and a letter for Lucinda. Emmeline was thrilled that her sister would be joining her at Hogwarts, and although she hoped that Lucinda would be sorted into Ravenclaw with her, she was still happy to at least have her sister at school with her, even though Lucinda was sorted into a different house (Hufflepuff).

At Hogwarts, Emmeline found Ravenclaw to be rather like a home away from home, even without her brother or sister around (she'd always been close to both of them, and she missed them terribly in her first couple of years, being away from her family and home). Her favourite "discovery" at Hogwarts was the library, and she would spend much of her time in her seven years at Hogwarts holed up in the library, studying or even just reading for pleasure.

Ever since her first year, when her roommate Amala overheard her singing, Amala has been wheedling with Emmeline to join the choir. Of course, Emmeline was way too shy to join the choir. Up there, singing in front of other people … no way. Finally, in their fifth year, Amala wore Emmeline down, and she joined the choir. As long as nobody tries to get her to do a solo, Emmeline is more or less okay with being up there, since there are others with her, too.

Also in their fifth year, Emmeline buried herself in studying for the O.W.L.s, earning seven Os and two Es. For her sixth year, she chose to drop only Herbology and Astronomy, keeping the other seven, despite her friends trying to talk her out of it. Even with seven N.E.W.T.-level courses, Emmeline managed to keep up with her studies and maintain top marks.
