History

Marlene is the eldest child of Murray and Marianne McKinnon. The parents decided to make a whole family of M names, thus naming their daughters Marlene, Madilynn, and Monica. Murray, an Edinburgh, Scotland, native, moved to London in 1952 while in the Auror-training program with the Ministry of Magic after having finished at Hogwarts (with Os on all six of his NEWTs). It was here that he met Marianne Bonheur, a Parisian and Beauxbatons alumna who had just transferred to the British Ministry from the French one. They fell in love and the rest, as they say, is history. When Marlene was born in 1959, Murray and Marianne moved to Kent county, into a small cottage house outside of Maidstone (they didn't want to raise their family in the hustle and bustle of the city). Madilynn and Monica followed Marlene in quick succession, the girls barely a year apart in age from each other. As such, the girls grew up very close to each other, and Marlene took on a bit of a mothering tendency with her sisters, looking out for them and sticking up for them.

The biggest tomboy of the family, Marlene immediately took to quidditch, much to her father's delight. She also became fascinated with his job and as he told her more stories, she wanted even more desperately to become an Auror, just like him. Whenever Murray and Marianne could both get time off from work for family vacations (which they tried to do for a few weeks at least every summer), they would travel to France and visit Marianne's brother and his family. Marlene and Alain, the eldest of their two cousins, have a long-standing tradition of trying to best the other in any competitions they can think of (ranging from the silly — who can hold their breath the longest — to the not-so-silly — who can score the most goals against the other in one-on-one quidditch).

Although Marianne had held out hope that her daughters might want to attend Beauxbatons, Marlene started at Hogwarts in 1970 and was immediately sorted into Gryffindor, her father's former house. The Sorting Hat had barely grazed her head before it sent her off to the Gryffindor table. Marlene took this as a Very Good Sign, being sorted into her father's house. Surely the house that had started her father off in the direction of becoming an Auror would do the same for her. She loved quidditch and wanted desperately to get onto the team, but used all of the patience that she possessed to wait calmly until the tryouts in her second year. That year, she was made a reserve chaser for the team, but bided her time and was made a full chaser the following year. She's been a chaser on the team ever since. When Madilynn was sorted into Gryffindor in Marlene's second year, she was thrilled to have her sister in the same house as her. Monica was sorted into Hufflepuff the following year, but Marlene is still determined to stay close to her, as well, despite their different houses. In her fourth year, Marlene was invited to join the "prestigious" Slug Club. Although she snickered a little at the name, she was a little flattered to be asked to join. She finds some of the events (okay, most of them) a little silly (okay, more than a little), but she has fun anyway.

Marlene's closest friends are her dormmates: Lily, Alice, Tierney, and Mary. Her ice-breaking line was the wonderfully charming "Oi, I hope none of you four snore, because if you do, you might wake up one morning smothered to death by my pillow." A decent student, Marlene took most quickly to the classes she enjoyed and was good in, though determination got her through Charms and Potions, both classes that she didn't care much for (she wasn't quite so adept at them as she was at others) but that she knew she would need to get into the Auror program. In her third year, she added Care of Magical Creatures and Muggle Studies to her course load, though she opted to drop Muggle Studies and keep Care of Magical Creatures for her sixth year. She did pass all nine of her O.W.L.s, earning Es or Os in seven and only two As: Astronomy and History of Magic. Although all she needs are five N.E.W.T.s for the Auror Training Program, she decided to take six N.E.W.T.-level courses (Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration) and is determined to get Os on all of them, just like her father did.
