History

Francis Wyke met Jocelyn Bennett when they were just ickle firsties at Hogwarts. After the adolescent "ewww, I hate you, you're a boy/girl and boys/girls are icky!" phase passed, they started dating in their sixth year. Their common ground (as they were in different Houses, him in Ravenclaw and her in Hufflepuff) was their creative passions. Francis was a writer; he loved writing just about anything: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, songs. Jocelyn loved to sing and had a beautiful soprano voice. After they both graduated from Hogwarts in 1951, they each struggled for a while until they both found their professional niches: Jocelyn became a singer, and her voice was often heard on the WWN, while Francis managed to score a job writing for the popular WWN serial "Timeturner Tales." They continued dating and, in 1957, they got married.

Their first child, a daughter they named Emily, was born in early 1959. Jocelyn spent the first year of Emily's life trying to juggle singing and raising an infant, but when she became pregnant with a second child, she decided to take a break from singing and focus on her children. Bertram was born in late 1960, followed by Grace in early 1963, Tanner in 1966, and finally the twins Shirley and Kirkley in 1969.

Emily was doted upon as the oldest child, but being the oldest also carried certain responsibilities: she was expected to help take care of her younger siblings as soon as she was old enough to do so. Though Jocelyn always tried to make sure that her eldest child never felt sleighted by it, so she made sure to spend one-on-one time with Emily as often as possible. That one-on-one time eventually became singing lessons, and Emily came to love singing as much as her mother did. Although the younger ones were also taught to sing, Jocelyn still considered her one-on-one singing time with Emily to be special, and Emily loved the individual attention from her mother, as well as the singing.

Francis, too, wanted to pass on his own creativity to his children, so he would often take them to the offices to see the creative process that went into "Timeturner Tales." Emily became enthralled with the goings-on of the writing process, though she decided she wasn't as interested in writing fiction as her father was. Still, the love of writing was tucked away for use at a later time.

In the summer of 1970, when Emily was eleven and the twins Shirley and Kirkley were barely a year old, Emily received her Hogwarts letter. None of the family was surprised, and although Emily wasn't happy to be leaving behind all of her siblings, she was admittedly looking forward to attending the school her parents had attended.

At Hogwarts, she was sorted into Hufflepuff, and she came to love her house and her housemates dearly, almost like an extended family (as if her immediate family wasn't already big enough!). Sweet, outgoing, and charming, she became close to her dormmates almost immediately, as well as some of the older Hufflepuffs and even people in other houses. When it came to friendships, she didn't discriminate based on house or blood or anything silly like that.

It was in Emily's third year at Hogwarts that she felt she really hit on what she wanted to do with her life. In giving a friend advice, she realized that she was pretty good at it! Plus, she started taking Divination and absolutely loved it. She's even fully convinced that she can see a person's aura, so she offers to read people's auras, and also give relationship advice (which usually ends up having information about their aura and a bit of fashion advice bundled up with it) to anyone who wants it.

The summer before her fifth year, she read a column in a muggle newspaper called "Dear Abby," and she was inspired. After much thought was put into it, she decided in December of that year to start up her own advice column at Hogwarts: "Dear Emily," where fellow students could write to her with relationship woes (or any woes!) and she would help them out with it, either by writing back (via the journals, of course) or by inviting the people involved to sit down and talk about it. (If Dr. Phil existed as he is now at that time, she would fancy herself a Hogwarts version of him, as well!)

At the same time, Emily still loves to sing. She's a mezzo-soprano in the Hogwarts Choir, and she hopes that she could manage, after Hogwarts, to have both a singing career as well as a writing career as a relationship columnist.

Personality

Got a problem? Need advice on that messy relationship? Do you really like that fit bloke / bird, you just don't know how to let them know about it? Madame Emily is at your service! Emily is happy to help out when it comes to relationship woes. Although she's only had a few relationships of her own, she's good at sitting people down and helping them figure things out, or dishing out advice on what to do. Of course, all of her advice is garnished with talk of their aura and how that's contributing to the problems, and how to clear up your aura to make the problems easier to deal with, and occasionally a bit of fashion advice if it's necessary.

Emily tends to kind of live off in her own world. She has a subscription to the Daily Prophet, but she rarely gives the current events or "other boring stuff" more than a passing glance. Witch Weekly really is more her speed than the DP, but she has dreams of writing for the Prophet (as an advice columnist, of course!), so she keeps an eye on the paper (and an eye on Barney Cuffe, as well, considering he could very well hold her future in his hands! Sucking up is not a skill that she has problems with).

She's a bit on the nosy side, but not in the "I want to know all about your life so I can go gossip about it" way, but rather in the "I want to know what's going on in your life so I can help you fix your problems" way. Emily has no problems with asking personal questions if she thinks that they'll help with the problem, but she won't turn around and spread the answers all around the school.

Bright and cheerful, Emily will be enthusiastic about helping people, but don't worry, she's not analyzing you the entire time if you're just hanging out with her as friends. Unless there seems to be a problem, in which case she'll start looking at you like you're someone who needs her help. Of course, there's nothing nearly so annoying as a fifteen-year-old telling you how to fix your problems, especially if you're older than her.

Raised in a media-centric family, Emily loves attention and praise. She's a member of the Hogwarts choir, but her mum beat into her head at an early age that prima donnas are not acceptable in the Wyke family, so she holds back on the love of attention and praise when it comes to the choir. She dreams of being an accomplished singer like her mum, and she will occasionally give singing advice, as well (which is usually started with "You know, my mum is Jocelyn Bennett -- you know, the singer? -- and she always said ..." Of course, her advice (both with singing and with relationships and the like) is usually phrased as constructively as she can manage, though she still sometimes comes off sounding like an annoying little know-it-all.

Ten Years Later

In ten years, Emily will be: married to a muggle, with a two-year-old daughter that she hopes will be a witch. She sings, and is often featured on the WWN, but she also has muggle records out (with muggle songs, even!), at the request of her husband. At the same time, she also writes an advice column (similar to Ask Abby) for the Daily Prophet. Her younger brother, Bertram (who she sometimes still teasingly calls BertBert), became a Hit Wizard. Although the war had essentially ended by the time Bertram finished his training, Emily still spent the next few years on pins and needles, since it was still believed that there were still followers of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named out there. She has mellowed out some, partly from being a mother, and partly from having responsibilities (like her Daily Prophet job). She still loves to give people advice and wants to fix things for everyone, but she can also rein in her enthusiasm when necessary.
