Blurb

Jedidiah and Nanette Zephan wanted a son. Insted, they got two daughters: Janine Abaigael and, five years later, Delilah Eden. Janine was the perfect daughter, doing everything her parents asked of her, obeying their every wish like a puppet. The one who accepted her arranged marriage with a smile and with perfect grace. Delilah was the troublemaker. She was the one who disobeyed her parents (for which she was frequently lashed), sneaking around and having affairs with the servants (really, just the ones she wanted her parents to dismiss anyway). When Jedediah and Nanette attempted to arrange a marriage for their younger daughter, Delilah stole a male servant's clothes (while he slept peacefully in her bed once she was done with him) and used them as a disguise to run away. It was several years before the Zephan family — too ashamed by the scandal to show their faces in polite society again — saw Delilah again. By that time, she was different. Eternal. A vampire. Her parents disowned her, claimed her as dead, for so spitting upon the face of God by choosing eternal life on earth, instead of in Heaven with Him. Less than two weeks later, her parents, as well as her sister's family, were found dead, their bodies drained of blood. Delilah says that her sister's husband tasted the best.

House Zephan

House Zephan was previously known as House Winchester. The last Winchester leader was Marcus Winchester, the natural-born vampire son of the patriarch of the House. He overthrew his father in the late 18th century, deciding that the old man was behind in the times. During Marcus' rule, he immersed himself and his House into human politics, manipulating whatever he could to meet his own end — which was usually amusement, nothing more — as if the world was his chess game.

During The Great War (now referred to commonly as World War I), Marcus had his fingers in all the major parties involved, gleefully assisting in turning them against each other simply for the joy of chaos. A small faction of his house, led by Delilah Zephan, who had been a part of the house ever since she was turned in the early 1800s, started plotting during the years following the war to overthrow Marcus. They were tired of his constant manipulation of the various governments for his own ends. Shortly after World War II began, helped along once again by Marcus' subtle prodding, the resistance, which had gained so much in numbers that they vastly outnumbered Marcus and his loyals, overthrew Marcus, placing Delilah at the head of the House. Marcus, his loyals, and anyone else who might pose a threat were all killed.

Once she was settled in her position as the leader of House Winchester, Delilah changed the name to her own, Zephan. She said that, while most of the vampires within the house were the same, House Zephan would be run far differently than House Winchester had been. Instead of using the influence of her House in the political world, she instead focused it on art and architecture: funding restorations of historic buildings and artifacts, buying masterpieces, then loaning them to various museums, funding struggling but promising young artists and composers.

Any who posed a threat to her House or the vampires within it were dealt with quickly. However, because humans believed they still ruled the world, she kept a rather tight rein on those in her House, limiting their feeding such as to avoid detection. When the Saint Etienne Corporation "outed" them to the world, and they, the Six, divided it up, Delilah took Europe as her own area. The first thing she did was give religious personae the chance to escape, go elsewhere that they might not be hunted. For under House Zephan rule, public religion was outlawed (although worshipping whichever Gods people cared to worship in their own homes was fine). Any Priests, Rabbis, Shamans, et cetera — public figures of any religion — that did not leave Europe within six months of the decree were rounded up and held in captivity. They were then either used for entertainment purposes, or for feeding purposes.

Those who were among Lilah's most loyal Inner Circle, from the time of the overthrow of Marcus, remained her most trusted advisors. Six were sent to various major cities around Europe, and they were made leaders of their own sects within the House. They were permitted to run things as they saw fit, although Lilah oversaw everything and would not hesitate to take action if she disagreed with any of their structuring. She kept a particular eye on the siring of humans. If she felt that one of her people was siring those who were "unfit," the unfit would be tied up outside to await the dawn, and the sire would be imprisoned for however long Lilah deemed necessary. If the problem persisted, they, too, would be given over to the dawn's light.

Humans — as long as they do not meddle in the affairs of the vampires, and do not publicly practice their religion or attempt to enforce it upon others — are allowed to live relatively freely, although at any moment they could become a meal for a hungry vampire; humans have no right to life, just whatever is granted them by their betters.

Membership: Not all vampires living in Europe must be a part of House Zephan, but while they are in Europe, they must abide by the laws of the House, and they must inform Lilah of their presence, including which sect they will be residing in (said sect's leader must be informed, as well). Members of the House are allowed to travel freely around Europe, but they must inform Lilah if they intend to travel beyond the borders, and permission must be granted (if needed) by the leader of whatever continent they are traveling to.
