History
The middle child of Lucas and Helen Stockton, Richard grew up in a fairly normal environment. Although the family was aware of mutants around them (they even knew some mutants themselves), they were generally okay around them. The family owned and ran Stockton's Deli in downtown Springfield, and the children (eldest Michael, Richard, and youngest Courtney) all were expected to help out in the deli when they were old enough. In high school, Richard met Alexis Jefferson. They dated all through high school and attended Springfield University together, where he majored in business management and she majored in journalism. After graduating from college, they got engaged and were married on Valentine's Day in 2011.
On May 10, 2012, their first child was born, a daughter that they named Lilliana. Three years later, on September 21, 2015, their son Wyatt was born. Richard had taken over as manager of Stockton's Deli when Lilliana was two, and Alexis had a job as a columnist for the Springfield Daily News (local newspaper), so the family did well for themselves. Richard and Alexis raised their children in the relative peace of Springfield.
Relative peace, that is, until April 15, 2020. The family was spending the day walking around downtown Springfield when the super villain Master Blaster tore through the city, destroying buildings and raining debris down upon the people on the streets. Somehow, in all the chaos and panic, Lilliana was torn away from her parents and buried under a pile of debris. By the time the debris could be moved, she was dead.
After the death of their young daughter, Richard and Alexis' marriage began falling apart. They fought all the time, and a part of Richard blamed Alexis for their child's death (the other part of him blamed himself). They separated after a couple of months, then finally got a divorce a year later. Alexis took Wyatt and moved to New York City, while Richard sold their old apartment and moved into the small apartment above the deli.
Over the past six years, Richard has harbored a deep resentment of mutants. He wholly blames them for the death of his daughter and the breakdown of his marriage. He goes out of his way to avoid known mutants and will, on occasion, refuse to serve patrons of the deli if they're known to be mutants.
