History

Marcus Turpin and Indira Patil fell in love in their sixth year at Hogwarts together. It was a risky move for Indira, as Marcus was a muggleborn, which meant that her parents would never approve of him. They kept their love a secret: breaking away from friends during Hogsmeade weekends to steal a kiss behind Honeydukes, arranging secret trysts and "accidental" run-ins throughout the castle. But as the end of their Hogwarts years approached, they realised that they could not keep secret forever: Indira's parents were already in talks with other (pureblood Indian) families to secure an arranged marriage for Indira. When they stepped off the train at King's Cross at the end of their seventh year, they did so together, holding hands, and walked right up to Indira's parents. Indira came clean to her parents about her secret relationship, and they gave her an option: marry the boy they were arranging for her, or be cut out of the family forever.

It was the hardest choice of her life, but Indira chose love. Disowned by her family, she used the little bit of money she had to rent a room at the Leaky Cauldron, waiting tables at the inn to help pay her rent. Marcus secured a job at the Ministry, in the Department of Magical Transportation, and soon they were able to afford a small flat together in a slightly-irreputable area of muggle London. They married not long after, in the summer of 1952, in a small ceremony with just Marcus' family and a couple of friends. Although they both wanted children, they were in no place to raise a family, so they waited a few years.

In 1957, after having moved into a small house in a more reputable area of muggle London, son Noah was born, and the Turpins felt that nothing could make them happier. Not until Indira announced that she was pregnant again. Although Indira's pregnancy with Noah had been easy, such could not be said about her second pregnancy: she suffered horrible morning sickness, and was even confined to bedrest for the last month (Marcus' mother had to stay with the family to help take care of Noah). The labour and delivery were extremely difficult, and while a healthy baby girl (Emily Priya) was born, her mother slipped away less than an hour later.

Marcus was heartbroken by the loss of his wife. But he had two young children to care for (including a newborn!), so he had to steel himself and keep going. His parents and siblings helped out when they could, and when Emily was two, Marcus finally scraped together the money to hire a part-time nanny. Emily never knew her mother, or even her mother's family: the Patils wanted absolutely nothing to do with their disgrace of a daughter's children who carried the dirty blood of their father. So for years, it was just Marcus, Noah, Emily, the nanny, and the occasional Turpin relative. But Emily loved her little family, though she occasionally harboured jealousy toward other little children who had mothers when she didn't.

As soon as Emily learned how to read, books began opening up all sorts of windows into all sorts of other lives. She could read about other children who had lost a parent, or she could read about happy families with both parents. She could sail the high seas with the pirates or walk manicured gardens with royalty. The library was a haven to her, and she saved up her pennies to buy her own precious books when she could. While she could pick any book she wanted at the library, she spent hours at the bookstore, poring over titles, trying to find the one that was perfect for her hard-saved money.

Emily was eight when she met her father's girlfriend: Lauren Oldridge. She also worked in the Ministry, and she had a son Emily's age: Aaron Brocklehurst. While Noah was a little slow to warm up to Lauren, Emily took to her immediately: a mother-figure all her own, who became her actual (step-)mother a year later. Emily even didn't mind getting another brother in the deal, she was mostly just happy to get a mom. Of course, it wasn't long before Emily was as close with Aaron as she was with Noah: genetics didn't matter, he was just as much her sibling. And within a couple years, the family grew even more with the addition of a younger brother, Simon, in 1970, then a younger sister, Bridget, in 1972.

In 1971, Emily boarded the train to Hogwarts with Noah and Aaron, excited to finally be attending the school where her parents met, and which Noah had been telling her and Aaron all about. She hoped that both she and Aaron would be sorted into Ravenclaw with Noah, so she was more than a little upset when Aaron was sorted into Hufflepuff, instead (though cheered a bit when she was put into Ravenclaw with Noah). Despite being in different houses, Emily sought to continue to spend time with Aaron, though still made her own friends in her own house (and sought friends outside her house, as well).

Hogwarts was an exciting blur for Emily: all sorts of interesting classes, and she even loved her homework! In her third year, she added Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, and Muggle Studies, thinking they all sounded far too interesting to ever try to choose between them (Divination sounded like too much bogus, and Care of Magical Creatures just sounded like it would introduce way too many opportunities to get hurt). She devoted as much of her spare time as she could to the library: studying and doing her homework, as well as doing as much independent reading as she could manage. But she always made sure to make it out to the quidditch pitch for the Saturday matches: she'd never be able to play herself, but she so loved finally watching the sport that she had heard so much of on the wireless growing up. She would cheer herself hoarse rooting for Ravenclaw during their matches, even painting her face in blue and bronze and making banners! She was almost a quidditch groupie.

In fifth year, it was rare to see Emily outside of the library, where she holed herself up even more than in her previous four years, determined to do as well as she could on her O.W.L.s. She had to be seen by Madam Pomfrey several times over the course of the year because she was stressing herself out over the exams. Although her parents were proud of the scores she received that summer, Emily was disappointed in herself: all those hours in the library, all that studying, everything … and she'd gotten 4 Exceeds Expectations?! She certainly didn't exceed her own expectations, and just became that much more determined to do better on her N.E.W.T.s.

Now in her seventh year, Emily isn't entirely positive about what she wants to do with her life. She knows that she would like to go into research and/or academia, but isn't sure what the exact best way to pursue that would be. She supposes she could attend a muggle university, or apprentice herself to someone, but there are just so many decisions to make … not to mention the all-important N.E.W.T.s looming in the distance. It's only November, but she's already seen Madam Pomfrey three times for stress.

Personality

Positives

  1. Bookish: Hey, did you hear the one about the Ravenclaw who was walking around with her nose stuck in a book? Yeah, that might have been Emily you were making that joke about. Emily simply has a deep love and respect for books, and she is not shy or ashamed about it at all. She always has at least one or two books (not textbooks) with her at all times. It is simply not acceptable for her to find herself with unexpected free time and no book to read. She sees all this as a positive aspect of her personality, though knows that some may see it as detrimental. For sure, she may neglect to notice some things while she's walking around nose-deep in a book, but the positives outweigh the negatives: she has an abundant vocabulary (and knows how to use it properly) and a vast store of random information gleaned from many hours spent reading.
  2. Kind: Emily wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, if she saw a fly buzzing around inside the castle, she'd find a way to gently escort it outside, where it can be free and won't be swatted at by someone else. She extends that kindness to everyone, regardless of whether others may think they deserve it or not. She never has a negative word to say about anyone, partly because she well remembers that adage about how if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything at all (though she usually can think of something nice to say). She is always ready with a shoulder for someone to cry on, or a kind word after a hard day.
  3. Cautious: Emily thinks things through before acting on them, she very rarely acts spontaneously. She looks at situations from as many angles as she can manage, then tries to make a decision that is as well-thought-out as possible. She's even been known to make Pro & Con lists to help her in making decisions. Emily tends to get a little bit stressed if she isn't given the opportunity to stop and think about a decision, so she actually dislikes being called on in class unless she actually raises her hand (which she will do on occasion, but only if she's positive of her answer).

Negatives

  1. Gullible: Being well-read does not, unfortunately, translate into street-smarts, of which Emily has almost none. She is quite a bit gullible, willing to believe what others tell her, unless it really does make absolutely no sense (if you tell her that part of her N.E.W.T. exams will involve seeking out the giant squid in the lake, she'll work on her swimming skills, or at least start looking into spells that will help her not to drown; if you tell her that she's required to bring the giant squid into the Great Hall with her and perform a tango with it as her partner, she'll laugh it off). Because she herself is so kind and honest, she naturally expects it from others, so it's a bit of a shock to her when she finds out that people were lying, or playing a trick on her.
  2. Doormat: Also because she is so kind, Emily has a hard time saying no when people ask for help, so it sometimes results in her having the word "doormat" stamped on her head. She lets the needs of others outweigh her own needs, but she just cannot turn aside someone who needs help. She tends to not even realise that people are using her as a doormat, which perhaps makes it even worse.
  3. Easily Stressed: Emily has a tendency to get stressed out easily. Yes, everyone got stressed over the O.W.L.s (or eveyone who cared about their marks, anyway), but Emily got more stressed out about them than most, having to see Madam Pomfrey on multiple occasions for stress-related ailments. With N.E.W.T.s looming at the end of this year, Emily is already starting to feel the stress. Even non-school related things can cause Emily great stress: friends on the outs with each other and her caught in the middle, for one; she also tends to start getting stressed if she's given too much of her time to others and not taken time for herself; and her siblings all think it's weird of her to get stressed if she goes too long without reading or doing homework.

Likes: Daisies. Hot tea with honey. Peppermint anything. Rainy days (spent inside by the fire with a book). Quidditch (though she can't play to save her life, she loves watching). Ravenclaw Tower (home away from home). Time spent reading.
Dislikes: People who write in / dog-ear / otherwise damage books. People who bring food into the library (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). Strawberries (allergic). Coffee (it tastes far too bitter and leaves her far too jittery). When people comment on her and Noah not looking like the rest of their family. Liars.

5 Facts

  1. She has a very small personal library, books that she saved up her allowance (or earnings working summer jobs) to buy, and those books are among her most treasured possessions. (Relatively publicly-known?)
  2. She is hopelessly clumsy. She could trip over the air (and has). As a result, she's possibly the least athletic person in existence. (Publicly known, especially after the debacle that was first year flying lessons.)
  3. Her favourite quidditch team is the Chudley Cannons … she can't help but root for the underdogs. Plus, they're determined and just don't give up. (Public.)
  4. She cried when she got her O.W.L. results because she got 4 Es. (Close friends and family know.)
  5. As she's grown older, she's started looking at herself more closely in the mirror, just to see if she can find traces of her mother in her features (comparing herself to pictures her father has given her). (Private, except maybe to Noah and Aaron.)
