Jacob Macmillan and Henrietta Burke knew each other from school, having both been in Hufflepuff (Jacob a year ahead of Henrietta). When their parents announced that they were to be married, both were accepting of it: they liked each other well enough, and it was a good match for both families. Once they were married, they set to work having children: two sons (and heir and a spare) and a daughter. Once daughter Magdaline was born, they decided that three children was quite enough and left their family at that. Magdaline, being the youngest (by several years) and only girl, grew up being doted upon by her parents as well as her older brothers. There was an unspoken agreement between the other four members of the family to shield their little princess from the rest of the world, especially as unrest was starting to brew. She was too delicate, and there was simply no sense to worry her over things she had no hand in. As such, Magdaline grew up with a pair of rose-coloured glasses permanently attached to her face.
Magdaline had a very easy childhood. It helped that she had something of an easy disposition, but being constantly pampered and spoiled certainly lent itself to a pampered and spoiled attitude. But she remained friendly and easy-going despite all that. For as long as she could remember, she was primed for life as a Lady Of Society: she simply knew no other life, so she didn't desire anything different. She just accepted that to be a pureblood was something to be cherished and be proud of, that marrying for love was something only their lessers did, and that working was for men and those women who didn't have a man to provide for them. To Magdaline, these were all facts of life, and there was no sense in thinking otherwise or wanting anything else. When her eldest brother departed for Hogwarts, Magdaline at least had Eleazar home to play with, but once he joined Solomon, Magdaline felt slightly at loose ends. She still had lessons throughout the day, and her own friends with whom she could socialise, but there was just something about not having either of her brothers around that left her feeling lost. It was a thrill to finally receive her Hogwarts letter, because it meant that she would be joining them at Hogwarts, a connection to tradition in and of itself … how many generations of Macmillans had attended Hogwarts before them? How many more would continue to attend after? Not to mention all the stories she had heard from her brothers and parents about the school.
Her first night at Hogwarts, September 1, 1972, was the most nerve-wracking of them all. Her brothers had told her all about the sorting, assured her that it was painless, just a hat that was put on your head and announced your house. They assured her that she would be sorted into Hufflepuff, as they and their parents had been. But still, Magdaline was filled with worry that somehow this hat would decide to put her somewhere else. She needn't have worried, as the hat declared her a Hufflepuff for the whole Great Hall to hear, and Magdaline happily joined Eleazar at the Hufflepuff table.
Hogwarts was quite an adjustment for Magdaline. Throughout her childhood, she had only ever socialised with the pureblooded children of her parents' pureblooded friends. She had met a few half-bloods and seen them in Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, but she had never actually met a muggleborn, so to be in classes with them, sharing a common room with them … it was a bit of a culture shock (likely not nearly the culture shock that they had, but Magdaline never thought about it from the other's perspective). Of course, she had been raised to be friendly and sociable, so she was friendly to everyone, regardless of their bloodline (though she couldn't help her curiosity at what things were like for the muggleborns, and there were surely many tactless questions asked because she simply did not know any better).
Classes were, well, classes. Magdaline tried her hardest at them, but she wasn't necessarily an exemplary student, and there were so many other interesting things to do than homework and studying. And that P in History of Magic can totally be explained by the fact that Binns puts everyone to sleep! The most exciting thing to happen to Magdaline (thus far) at Hogwarts was just prior to the start of her fifth year: her letter from the school with her booklist contained a Prefect badge! She had been hoping the entire previous four years that she would get it, and then suddenly it was hers! She vowed to live up to the priviledge and responsibility expected of those who wore the badge.
After receiving her O.W.L. scores, Magdaline was stuck choosing her courses for N.E.W.T. level. Most of her peers chose theirs based upon their future career goals … as Magdaline was not planning to pursue a career, she had no such focus with which to choose her courses. In the end, she chose to continue on in only the classes that she had done well in: Charms, Potions, and Transfiguration. Surely they could be helpful for a future housewife? And with only three classes, she would have plenty of time in her schedule to assist younger students, and also to care for her own appearance.
