Aidan Proudfoot and Fionnuala Byrne met while they attended Hogwarts together (same year, but different houses: Hufflepuff for Aidan, Ravenclaw for Fionnuala). Bookish Fionnuala was a challenge for sporty Aidan, who pursued her with the determination to show that he wasn't just some brainless jock. Even after Fionnuala went on to Healer training and Aidan was recruited to the Montrose Magpies, he still pursued her. It was only after a career-ending injury led Aidan to the quidditch desk of the Daily Prophet that Fionnuala gave him a chance. A few months after they finally started dating, Aidan proposed, and they were married a few months later.
In 1960, the family of two became a family of three, though it didn't stay that way for long: Thomas was still only a few months old when Fionnuala got pregnant again, and his little sister Brianna was born just over a week before his first birthday. From the start, Thomas was protective of his little sister. Brianna never seemed to mind, so he settled comfortably into his role as protector. He also developed an interest in sports: Aidan passed on his love of quidditch to his son, but Thomas' muggle uncles and cousins on Fionnuala's side of the family also dragged him into muggle sports: rugby and football mostly. Thomas greatly looked forward to going to Hogwarts and trying out for the quidditch team of whichever house he was sorted into (from everything their parents and other wizard relatives told him and Brianna, Thomas fully expected to be sorted into Gryffindor) — the only thing he didn't like about going off to Hogwarts was that he would be leaving Brianna behind.
But September 1, 1972, rolled around and Thomas boarded the Hogwarts Express for the first time, after a tearful goodbye to his sister. Though he missed her, he was quick to make friends with other first students. At the Sorting Ceremony, the hat barely grazed his head before sending him to the Gryffindor table. School was fun for Thomas. Sure, some of the classes were boring, but there was quidditch (even though he couldn't try out for the house team until his second year) and the castle was just full of all sorts of fun surprises (talking portraits who could move around between paintings, moving staircases, etc).
In his second year, Thomas was glad to have Brianna join him at school, even moreso when she was sorted into Gryffindor with him. Also that year, he made it onto the house quidditch team as a reserve keeper (he didn't make starting keeper until fourth year, after the previous one had finished school). He also took up the mantle of protector with younger students, too, when he stood up for a couple of first years (a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw) when an older student was picking on them. It was the end of his second year, when they were starting to look into electives to add for third year, that Thomas decided on what he wanted to do with his life: he wanted to be an Auror. The brochure told him what he needed to focus on, and the traits that the Ministry would look for in a training candidate, so it gave him a sense of focus for the next few years. Although not the most studious student, he focused his energy on the four necessary classes for Auror training (Charms, DADA, Potions, Transfiguration), determined to at least get top marks in those courses on his O.W.L.s to ensure he would get into the N.E.W.T.-level ones. He knew he would need five N.E.W.T.s, but with the fifth one not being as important as the other four, he simply did the best he could in his remaining classes, figuring he'd choose his fifth class after he got his O.W.L. results.
Thanks to a lot of hard work on his part, he managed to earn four Os on his O.W.L.s — in the four classes that he had focused on. Three Es gave him three options for his fifth class, and he opted to keep Herbology, figuring that knowledge of plants might help with building knowledge of poisons and andidotes (and would be more helpful for an Auror than either Care of Magical Creatures or Muggle Studies). His only non-passing class in O.W.L.s was History of Magic, but that was unsurprising: did anyone actually pass that class, with Binns droning on the way he did? Thomas was among the students who tended to doze off in class, and since History wasn't important for becoming an Auror, it wasn't important enough for him to bother with.
Now entering his sixth year, Thomas is glad to have a reduced schedule of only five classes (it's much easier to focus on what he needs for Auror training when he doesn't have homework and studying for less-important classes to clutter up his time), in addition to the hopes of being tapped for one of the whispered-about Secret Societies. He knows that his father was a member of a quidditch society at Hogwarts, though he doesn't want to follow his father's legacy footsteps: he'd rather be tapped for a society that would help him get into Auror training … and maybe even one day become head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. And, of course, he still needs to protect his sister.
