History

John Smith met Elaine Tanner when he ended up in Albany on a day off from West Point. He was wandering around the city when he bumped into Elaine quite literally. To apologize for nearly knocking her down, he asked her out to lunch. They began writing letters and John would visit her in Albany whenever he could. Just after John graduated from West Point, he and Elaine were married. John was sent to Fort Hood, where he had spent most of his own childhood, and he and Elaine lived there for the first five years after John graduated. In the fifth year of their marriage, their first child was born, a son that they named Theodore William (after former presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley). Just under two years later, daughter Betsy Martha (after Betsy Ross and Martha Washington) was born. Although Elaine would have preferred to raise the children in one place, she also wanted the family to stay together, so as John was transferred all around the United States, Elaine, Theodore, and Betsy moved with him. They hardly spent more than two years in any one place, thus labeling their children the perpetual new kids at any school they went to.

Despite the constant moving around, Theodore had as normal of a childhood as possible. He had school, homework, tests, friends. Growing up constantly surrounded by other military families, and from a military family (both his father, obviously, and also his grandfather served in the army), he grew up with the expectation that he would follow in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. He began physical training at an early age, learning sports skills, though he never lived in any place long enough to make it worth it to try out for any teams, and he worked to, as his father put it, fine-tune the machine that is his body. As he entered puberty and his teenage years, he began weight training, building up strength and muscle mass.

Throughout his teenage years, Theodore worked toward the goal of going to West Point, as his father and grandfather had, then serving his five years active service (plus three inactive-reserve) in the army. Beyond that, however, Theodore is not sure what he wants to do with his life. He is unsure if he really wants to be career military like his father is, but he does not know what else he would want to do, otherwise. There are no particular subjects that he prefers, he merely studies to do well in school and maintain his grades (also, he has limited after-school activities beyond his school's JROTC, since there always was little reason to get involved, since he figured he would always be moving shortly).

He never really had any girlfriends, either. Part of this was because of the constant moving around, but it was also compounded by the fact that when he did meet girls at his various schools, he was seen more as The Nice Guy than The Possible Boyfriend. He was the type of boy that parents would be thrilled if their daughters brought home, which seemed to be exactly why girls weren't exactly lining up to bring him home to meet mom and dad.

Finally, however, in the late spring of 2008, John was offered a job at West Point, which he accepted. This finally provided a chance for the family to settle down and let Theodore and Betsy finish up high school in one place (even though Theodore only had one year left at this point). After much discussion, it was decided that the family would move to Albany, Elaine's hometown, and John would commute between Albany and West Point. A house was bought in Albany, as well as a small condo near West Point so that John could live there during the week and the rest of the family would have some place to stay if they decided to spend some time nearer West Point and New York City. After Theodore and Betsy finished school for the year, the family packed up and moved out to New York in the middle of June.
