History

Scott is the older son of Lucas and Amalia Bagley, with his brother Roger five years younger than him. Life for the Bagleys was relatively quiet: Lucas worked in an orthopedic practice, so he had fairly regular hours during the boys' childhood (though there were always emergencies) and Amalia stayed home with Scott and Roger while she wrote. The boys went to school, did homework, were signed up for after-school activities, the family had dinner together most nights, they were basically the sort of family you might see in an old sitcom. But there were, of course, secrets. Lucas' mistresses. Amalia's drinking. Scott staying up late to finish his homework after having made sure Roger was taken care of. Scott quickly became the one who took care of everyone else.

As Scott got older, he also became the one who managed to know everything going on around school, who was selling what, and he was even on the list of sellers. Not drugs like some of the other guys, but papers and essays. Selling papers continued as he started college, a way to earn some extra money besides the assorted jobs he worked part-time. At the suggestion of his advisor, he joined the pre-med program, and was accepted into the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Between classwork and working as a bartender, he had almost no life during med school. Almost. He met Anna Westin at the bar where he worked, and it was love at first sight. They had been dating for about a year and living together for five months when he asked her to marry him, shortly before he started his third year of med school.

And that was the year that his world was turned upside down. He had gone out after his shift at the bar to buy some pills from a classmate, to help him stay awake to study. After taking the pills and parting ways, Scott got turned around and ended up... somewhere. He had no idea how he got from the middle of the city to the middle of a field, just that suddenly he was there. Seeing a wall ahead, he started heading that way, figuring it was the way back to campus, but tripped and ended up falling asleep and spending the night in the field. The next morning he managed to make it to the wall, but it was definitely not anything he'd ever seen in San Diego.

Learning where he was and that he would never get back home sent him into a bit of a spiral. He ended up staying at the castle for an extended period of time, coming to grips with his new reality (and alternately starving himself and gorging on the food offered in the dining hall at dinner. He returned often to the field, hoping some vortex would swallow him up and take him back home... or alternately hoping that Anna would appear. It was only after coming upon someone who was hurt and needed help that he started breaking out of his spiral. It reawakened in him the spark of purpose, of needing to help others. It wasn't long after that that he found his home, which was the sort of fancy penthouse that he and Anna had talked of one day living in (once he was a rich doctor), but also had a separate entrance and an area where he could see patients. He set himself up as a general practice doctor (he was pretty sure nobody would mind horribly much that he hadn't actually finished med school, but there was a pretty heavy emphasis on "practice" for those first few years), though he also went through a pretty big crash course in learning about non-human biology, as well.

Personality

"That guy who will work himself into exhaustion and then wake up to do it again tomorrow" is a fairly apt description of Scott. He will work until he burns out, and then after taking days or even weeks to recover, he's right back to it. He was on his way toward a burn out in med school before he ended up in Abenterra; in all honesty, even if he made it through med school, he probably wouldn't have made it through residency. He knew exactly who to go to when you needed something to help you stay awake to finish a paper, or when you needed something to help you sleep after drinking too many energy drinks. He prioritized everything else ahead of his own well-being, he was too focused on the end result to care about how he got there or what condition he would end up being in.

When he's not on the verge of running himself ragged, Scott is a congenial, chivalrous guy. He holds doors open for people, he would give up his seat on public transportation to others back when he lived in a world with public transportation, he is always ready with a smile, an open ear, and a shoulder to cry on. He likes taking care of others and likes feeling needed, which is part of what led him on the doctor path.
