History

Alexandra Jugson had all sorts of pesky notions about true love and happily ever after. Oh, yes, she believed in purism, too, of course, but oh how she wanted to marry for love! It was a notion that her family had thought she would grow out of, until she eloped at the tender young age of eighteen, still fresh out of Hogwarts, to Montrose Magpies beater Cormack McLeod. At least, for her family's sake, he was a pureblood, though to say the family was displeased in her impetuousness would be like saying a hurricane is a light breeze. For several years, Alexandra was happy to just be a Quidditch Wife, and even though she knew that she ought to do her Pureblood Wife Duty and bear her husband a few heirs, being married to a quidditch star without any children to worry about was just so much more enticing. So when they ended up with two children within a couple years of each other after eight years of marriage, neither child was particularly planned, but they weren't exactly entirely unwanted, either. Cormack, at least, had always wanted children. Alexandra only cared about making sure Cormack had a male heir (son Julian, born second), and then promptly stopped bearing children, in order to maintain her figure.

Isla, the firstborn daughter, grew up knowing that her mother had essentially laughed in her parents' faces by choosing to run off and elope with someone she barely knew but claimed to love. She witnessed first-hand how fickle love could be when, at the tender age of six, she saw her mother suddenly fall out of love with her father, simply because Cormack had been in an accident on the pitch: a particularly fierce bludger hit him square in the face, breaking his nose, cheekbone, and browbone, rendering him blind in one eye and just a little bit "too ugly" to Alexandra's discerning and picky eye. At least Alexandra knew better than to risk the stigma of a divorce, but Isla sided with her father on all things over her fickle mother. She even made attempts to build a connection with her mother's family: her grandparents, uncle, aunt, and cousins. After all, it was hardly their fault that her mother was such a failure, and she was determined to show them, even from a young age, that she was most certainly not her mother's daughter.

Unfortunately, there was one trait that Isla picked up from her mother, and that was the ability to lie flawlessly. As Alexandra engaged in extramarital affairs in search of "love," Isla occasionally discovered her mother's antics and, instead of drawing attention to them and shaming her family (or, more specifically, herself, her father, and Julian), she learned instead not only how to lie, but also how to exploit her mother with her knowledge of the affairs. But she made no secret how much she greatly disliked her mother.

When Isla finally went off to school, she promised to write her father and brother frequently, and also requested that her mother not come see her off at King's Cross. Upon reaching Hogwarts, Isla was pleased to be sorted into Slytherin, with her older cousin Francesca. Unfortunately, it did give her something to have in common with her mother, but she chose instead to look at it as something in common with her cousin. Her first year was when Sirius Black had escaped from Azkaban, and as long as the Dementors didn't hurt any of the students who mattered (and stayed far far away from her), she didn't so much mind them being there, if it meant they'd protect the students from Black. For the tri-wizard Tournament … she actually rooted for Viktor Krum because he was a famous quidditch player and, because she's a major daddy's girl, she loves quidditch players. She did wear a Potter Stinks! badge, mostly because she didn't think it was fair that a stupid fourth year somehow cheated and got to compete, though Diggory's death was quite tragic (he was too fit to have died!). For her third year, Isla added Divination and, to the shock of her housemates, Muggle Studies. The reasoning she gave for taking the class varied every time somebody asked, ranging from "morbid curiosity" to "blow-off class" to "know thy enemy." The death of the Headmaster at the end of Isla's fourth year was shocking in that, well, it was the Headmaster, killed at school! But at the same time, he wanted to hug all muggles or something like that, and thought that muggles and mudbloods were as good as purebloods, and also, he was really old, so he was probably going to die soon anyway (not like Diggory, who was young and fit and shouldn't have died).

In the summer after her fourth year, Alexandra considered keeping Isla and Julian home, but Isla balked, wanting to go back to school and see what kind of changes would be made with a new Headmaster who wasn't Dumbledore, and also if she had to spend any more time with her mother than was absolutely necessary, she would have screamed. Luckily, attendance was made mandatory. Near the end of the summer, Isla happened to catch Alexandra's latest paramour attempting to sneak out of the house. In attempts to distract her with "compliments" (Isla is sure), he commented on how much Isla resembled her mother. The next day, Isla bleached her hair to a white-blonde and started wearing heavier makeup, in attempts to make herself look as little like her mother as possible.
