Evan and Susan Cummings wanted a son. They had tried for five years to conceive, and when they finally did, they were so convinced that they would have a son that they only decided on boys' names. When a daughter was born instead, they had already gotten attached to the name, so they gave her a boy's name: James Evan Cummings. Evan and Susan tried to raise James to be more of a tomboy and tough girl, but she already hated having a boy's name, and she didn't want people thinking she really was a boy.

As soon as she was old enough to fight it, she stopped her mom from keeping her hair cut short and let it grow longer, down past her shoulders. She wore dresses and skirts whenever possible, and she insisted on ballet lessons at an early age. Once James hit school age, she began going by the name Jaycee (from her initials, J. C.) because then her name at least sounded more like a girl's name, and it helped cut down on the teasing. Up until she was fourteen, she lived as normal a life as she could manage.

During the meteor shower on July 5th, 2001, she'd happened to be in an area of the city that was devastated. Luckily (perhaps), she didn't die, but she was in the hospital in bad shape for a couple of weeks. Starting within a few weeks after leaving the hospital, she began hearing voices in her head. She also noticed that nothing felt as hot anymore (she used to love nearly-scalding showers, but no matter how hot she turned the tap, it didn't feel nearly as hot), and she thought she could control flames on the candles that she kept in her bedroom. After almost a year of this, her parents took her to a psychiatrist in June, 2002. Although traces of Socadium were found in her bloodstream, she wasn't able to demonstrate the powers she believed she had, so the psychiatrist diagnosed her as a paranoid schizophrenic, prone to delusions and auditory hallucinations. James was sent to Oppidan Asylum for treatment.

In early September of 2006, Evan and Susan were killed in an automobile accident. Per their will, James was released from the asylum (they wanted her released unless she was showing improvement, which she wasn't) and their house was to be sold quickly (they didn't think their crazy daughter should have to live in the house by herself, she should have somewhere smaller to live). Being an only child, she inherited everything her parents owned (which wasn't much, really), so she has something to live on until she can find someone willing to hire a "crazy person."
